It will b* remembered that Lincoln lately recommended, ' and Congress adopted, a resolution looking to emancipation in the border Statea. The Louii- ville Journal, edited by the notorious Prentiw, thus exclaimed against the muasure, but ezclaiiu- ed iu vain: “When we consider that it utterly repudiatet th* iolr^mn and o/t-repeattd pledges o/ every branch of the Goiernment as well as the organic princi- ! pie of the (wvvernment itsel/j when we consider Chatham—J H. Hcaden, John Manning Jr., > that it does this for the sake of abolishing the slave institutions, and destroying the municipal J freedom of the States which have rebelled under i the appreliension ol this very result, and which {the nation is seeking to win back to their allegi- j ance; when we consider, that if carried out, its inevitable effect would be the permanent destruc tion of the Govrrn/nent; when, iu short, we con sider tliat it combines in itseit conspicuously, all tlie arbitrariness, and all the wickedness, and all the woes of sece.ssion and abolitionism, we confess that we feel that it is too monstrous and too jla- granf in its monstrousne.ss, to require serious dis cussion. The project, in our judgment, is the most atrocious one ever proposed in the legisla ture of a free nation; but its very atrocity makes argument unnecessary. It cannot be necessary to argue against a proposition which, under tlie circumstances, every enlightened patriot must re gard as branding its authors as public enemies and as entitling them to the dunyeon or yalluios.’ HOL'.'iE OF t'oM.MuNS Alamance—Giles Mtbane Alexander—Dr J M Carson Anson — L li I’olk, E R ijiUs Aal.e—J M (jentry Burke—J 11 {’ear.'on Buiicombc—A S Merrimou Bla lon—C T Davis Bertie—P T Henry, and Fergusua Class of 1S25 (’lass nf iS'i'i ’la.ss 1 >27 Class of l '^2> S'Uth aroiinn—Messrs Robert W* Barnwell, Janus L (,)rr. ! Penland. The Lanjpst Ileicn iStones in the World. - Extracts from Lamartine’s “Pilgrimage to the Holy Ijand” in 1^32 and 1833. It is certain that some of the stones at Balbec, which are sixty-two feet long, twenty broad, and fifteen thick, are the most prodigious masses which have ever been moved by human power. The largest stones in the pyramids of Kgypt do not exceed eighteen feet. At length we reached the first blocks ot mar ble, which had been cast by earthquakes to the, distance of more than a mile from the monuments. One ot* these Balbec blocks measured sixty-two feet in length, twenty-four in breadth, and six teen in thickness. It would require the united strength of sixty j thousand men of our time to raise this* single ' stone. But the quarries ot Balbec contain j others ot still greater dimensions, standing twenty- I tive to thirty feet above the ground. Vri.\DiilU LITERITI'RE. The Works of Chas. Lamb, 5 vols.
